Potty Training Resistance - Is Your Child Resisting Your Potty Training Efforts?

Potty Training Resistance

From your perspective, your child is resisting all your efforts to be potty trained. You have tried it all and are feeling frustrated because you cannot understand why your precious child does not want to co-operate with you!!

Think about the issue from your child's perspective.

The first thing I want you to think about is how you feel about your parents. Do you want your parents to be proud of your achievements? Do you have a desire to please your parents? Even as an adult, our desire to please our parents is very strong. So, try and imagine how strong this desire is when you are a toddler.

So, know and be reassured, that most typical children have a strong desire to please their parents and if have communicated to them your desire to have them go in the potty instead of the diapers, they do indeed want to do that, but for cannot fulfill your desires. Not only is this frustrating for you, but it is also frustrating for the child who really does want to please his/her parents.

So approach this from your child's perspective and hopefully you can figure out what the issues are.

Children are often unable to explain the problems they have with our parenting techniques, and you child's only option may be to resist your effort to potty train or toilet train him/her. When trying to discern the reasons behind the resistance, it may help to quickly review the following common causes:

  • Confusion about the potty training or toilet training process or about what is expected of him/her

  • Curiosity about what will happen if s/he resists

  • Anxiety or fear about the process of elimination, or fear of the potty or the toilet

  • Independence and control issues that make it hard for him/her to satisfy your wishes at this time

  • Too much pressure to perform

  • Inappropriate potty training or toilet training technique that does not suit the child personality or learning style

  • Physical pain cause by an infection or constipation

So, figure out which one of these reasons could be the cause of potty training resistance and then develop and plan to help you child work through the issue you have identified.

Need some more information? Our detailed article on Potty Training Resistance will provide you with more information on each one of the reasons mentioned above and may help you pinpoint your child's reason for resisting your potty training efforts.

The idea for Potty Training Concepts™ was born after watching Dr. Phil's first show (aired in Nov 2002) on "Potty Train Your Child In One Day" . The show reminded me of the time I potty trained my boys. They are now 12 and 9. I had successfully potty trained both my children using a similar method from the book "Toilet Training in Less Than a Day" by two psychologists named Nathan H. Azrin, Ph.D. and Richard M. Foxx, Ph.D. At 2 and half years old, my oldest son was trained in less than a day. He had about 4 accidents in the next 3 days and that was it. My second child (was 2 yrs and 9 months old) had zero accidents. He went from diapers to "big kid" potty training pants without any problems.

I started thinking about those "good old days" and then remembered the little hurdles I had to go through to have the success I did. I remembered that my biggest challenge was to get all the supplies together - especially finding a doll that drinks and wets. I eventually found a drink and wet doll - it had a straight tube from the mouth to the bottom. Then what about the doll's potty training pants? The doll I had purchased was not wearing any potty pants, so I had to sew up some extra potty training pants for the doll!! But what if you have boys like I do and want an anatomically correct doll?

My experiences gave me the idea for Potty Training in One Day - The Complete System for Boys or Girls™. I have tried to incorporate all the things that I wish I had when I trained my kids. I hope that this site provides you will all the information, tools and supplies you need to potty train your children. Please let me know if this site is meeting your needs. What else would you like to see? What other products would you like me carry? Or any other thoughts you would like to share with me.
