Low Cost Individual Health Insurance - Tips to Save You Money

Author: Jessica Farrell

How can I buy a low cost individual health insurance plan? Well, it all depends on how much risk youre willing to take. Although prices vary from state to state, there are some basic things you can do to reduce your costs. Ask yourself these questions:

1. Can I keep my current doctor?

If you are absolutely determined to keep your current physician, check to see which insurance plans your doctor accepts. This will limit your coverage options depending on which insurance they accept.

2. Will I need a specialist like a chiropractor?

Depending on the plan, visits to specialists such as chiropractors may be limited. Determine how important such specialists are. Remember, the more the insurance covers, the more you pay in premiums.

3. Do I have children or am I planning to have them in the near future?

If you dont have children and do not plan to have them for some time, you might want to buy a policy that covers catastrophic illnesses only. This option is cheaper than a comprehensive plan.

If you have children, you will most likely want a more comprehensive plan.

4. How much out of pocket expenses can I handle?

If you dont want to pay a lot of out of pocket expenses, then you may want to choose an HMO plan. Your out of pocket expense will be your deductible and your co-pay. Remember, however, the more you are willing to pay out of pocket, the cheaper your premiums.

5. Can I negotiate with the insurance carrier directly or do I need an agent?

An insurance agent makes money by bringing together the consumer and the insurance company. The agent offers insurance expertise and receives a commission in return. Their commission is built into your insurance premium. The internet has made it possible for consumers to approach companies directly, thus eliminating the expense of an agent.
